Matters you take: what the assistant books for a law firm

Matters you take

For law firms, the Matters you take card on Settings is the list of matters your firm accepts and the ones it declines. When a caller says what their matter is about, the assistant checks their words against your list before it offers a consultation, and it never books a matter you declined.

This is separate from What your AI knows: facts there let the assistant *talk* about your practice; this list *decides*.

Set it up

  1. Open Settings and scroll to Matters you take.
  2. Under Matters you accept, enter one per line or separated by commas — "personal injury", "car accident", "family law", "DUI". Capitalization and accents do not matter.
  3. Under Matters you decline, enter the ones you do not take the same way. A declined term wins over an accepted one: if you accept "injury" and decline "medical malpractice", a "medical malpractice injury" is declined.
  4. Write your referral line — what the assistant says to a caller whose matter you decline, in your own words (for example the name of the referral service or the bar association's line you point people to). Leave it empty and the assistant closes politely without naming anyone.
  5. Leave If the matter is not on either list, book the consultation anyway ticked (the default) so an unlisted matter still reaches you; untick it and unlisted matters are not booked.
  6. Press Save matters.

Leave both lists empty and the check is off — every caller is booked, as before.

What the caller hears

  • Accepted or not on your list (with the default): the assistant continues the intake and books the consultation.
  • Declined: the assistant does not book. It reads your referral line if you wrote one, then closes politely. It never says why beyond that, never gives legal advice, and never comments on the matter.

What you see

When a matter is declined, the lead's page shows the refused booking with its reason. The caller's own words are not stored in the check's record — only whether the matter was accepted, declined or unlisted, and which of your terms matched.
